One of the most common things I hear as a GP is:
“Other people are worse off than me.”
“I should be coping better.”
“I don’t really need help.”
Meanwhile, the person sitting in front of me is exhausted, overwhelmed, not sleeping properly, stressed at work, emotionally flat, or quietly struggling through burnout, anxiety, relationship stress, grief, or financial pressure.
Modern life is heavy for many people right now.
And the reality is: you do not need to be in full crisis before you deserve support.
This is where an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) can be incredibly valuable.
An EAP is a confidential counselling and wellbeing service provided by many workplaces to support employees — and sometimes their immediate family members — with personal or work-related challenges.
This may include support for:
- stress and burnout
- anxiety or low mood
- workplace conflict
- relationship issues
- grief and loss
- financial stress
- sleep problems
- family pressures
- adjustment difficulties
One of the reasons I encourage patients to use EAP early is because preventative mental health care matters.
It is much easier to support people when stress is building… rather than waiting until someone completely crashes.
Many people are surprised to learn that EAP is:
- confidential
- separate from management
- free for employees
- often accessible quickly
- available via phone, video, or in person
For shift workers, busy parents, rural workers, FIFO employees, and people juggling demanding jobs, this accessibility can make a huge difference.
And importantly: using EAP is not weakness.
It is actually a sign of mental strength, insight and self-awareness.
As a GP, I often describe mental health support like physiotherapy for the mind.
Sometimes people simply need:
- a safe place to talk
- strategies to manage stress
- perspective
- emotional support
- tools to cope better
- someone outside the situation
And sometimes, EAP becomes the first step toward recognising that more support may also be needed through a GP, psychologist, or broader healthcare team.
You do not have to wait until everything falls apart before reaching out.
Small check-ins matter.
Because looking after your mental health is not selfish.
It is part of protecting your future health, relationships, work, and quality of life.
