As a GP, I often remind women that midlife is not simply about “getting older.”
It is a major health transition point — and one of the most important opportunities for prevention.
Many chronic health conditions begin to emerge during this stage of life, including:
- heart disease
- high blood pressure
- diabetes
- osteoporosis
- high cholesterol
- sleep problems
- weight changes
- menopause-related symptoms
- anxiety and depression
And importantly, many women minimise symptoms because they assume:
“I’m just tired.”
“It’s probably hormones.”
“This is normal for my age.”
Sometimes it is.
Sometimes it is not.
A good midlife health assessment with your GP can help identify risks early and support healthier ageing long before major problems develop.
A preventative women’s health check may include discussions around:
- heart health and blood pressure
- cholesterol and diabetes risk
- menopause and hormone changes
- sleep and mental health
- bone health and osteoporosis risk
- cervical screening
- breast screening
- bowel cancer screening
- bladder or pelvic floor symptoms
- alcohol intake, smoking or vaping
- exercise, nutrition and strength training
- sexual wellbeing and relationships
- family history and genetic risk factors
One of the biggest misconceptions in women’s health is that menopause is “just hot flushes.”
In reality, changing hormones can affect:
- sleep
- mood
- weight
- cholesterol
- blood pressure
- heart disease risk
- bone density
- bladder health
- concentration and memory
And women’s cardiovascular risk increases significantly after menopause.
This is why prevention matters so much in midlife.
Small changes genuinely add up:
🚶 regular movement
💪 strength training
🥗 eating more plants and protein
😴 prioritising sleep
🍷 reducing alcohol
🚭 avoiding smoking
👯 maintaining social connection
🩺 regular GP check-ups
Women deserve healthcare that looks at the whole picture — not just surviving, but helping women stay healthy, strong, active, and independent for the decades ahead.

Midlife is not the beginning of the end.
For many women, it can become the beginning of finally prioritising their own health.
